Very good indeed in the Julian Trevelyan-designed dust wrapper, non-price-clipped but with a little edge-chafing and edge-creasing. 'Journal 1936-1937' (1980). First edition. This copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "For Geoffrey Thorley, in friendship, gratitude & admiration - David Gascoyne Nayland, 6.X.87". 8vo. 144pp. Brown cloth lettered in gold at the spine. Top edge lightly spotted. A very good copy in the Julian Trevelyan-designed dust wrapper, non-price-clipped but very lightly faded at the spine panel and with a tiny trace of edge-wear. Gascoyne's journals, long believed lost, are here published for the first time. 'Paris Journal' chronologically the first journal, but the second discovered and published, includes an account of a visit to Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War, plus the first reprint of his short story 'Death of an Explorer' and his essay on Russian philosopher Léon Chestov, reprinted from the periodical 'Horizon'.
